Cute buttons may not be popping up everywhere yet as a fashionable trend, but I think we should bring them back by being experimental with denim vests or other items of clothing we feel like mutating! I love being artsy with clothes, because then I feel like no one else in the whole world will have exactly what I made for myself. With cute buttons, you could make any number of unusual and special pieces into personal works of art!
Just to tune you in on something new I learned this week: there is an actual button phobia. For those of you who don’t know, a phobia is the name of something inherent in someone’s mind or body that they are afraid of. There is a phobia for almost everything, but I had no idea that included buttons. It’s called koumpounophobia: fear of buttons, and more people suffer from it than you ever would have thought. It’s pretty intriguing, and now that I think about it, as someone with my own irrational fears, I can understand how buttons can be weird. I guess cute buttons are not so cute to everybody!
But buttons are a long-standing item in our history of clothing, serving a myriad of purposes as fasteners etc. At present, although they’re still used to fasten clothing, buttons have become more decorative than ever. Because of this, I’m going to put them to good use in the next few days as my new project!I’ve already found the denim vest I’m going to use. I suggest you find one with not too many details, so that when you add the buttons, they can have all the glory! You can either collect buttons over time, which takes up a pretty fair amount of time, or you can just buy a bag of them from the craft section at Wal-Mart. All you have to do is lay your vest out on a hard surface, put dots of fabric glue on the back, and stick your cute buttons on however you wish. You can stick on a rainbow of colors, or all white, or all blue. It’s up to you! And once you finish, it’ll be yours alone!
